Jaipur and Jaisalmer Rajasthan is the land of the former Maharajas, the mighty Indian sultans with their proud palaces and forts. In the capital Jaipur is the majestic Amber Fort, the most important attraction. Because of the color of the architecture, Jaipur is called the 'pink city'. It is a large, fascinating and surprisingly clean city, but certainly not the most beautiful in Rajasthan. Jaisalmer, Jodphur or Udaipur compete for that title. Jaisalmer, the 'golden city', is located in the far west of Rajasthan on the border with Pakistan. It is a real fairy-tale town, with its impressive fortress and golden-yellow havelis (merchant's houses) looming out of the blue in the desert. Jaisalmer is small, the atmosphere is relaxed and the view of the fort from almost every roof terrace is magical, especially in the evenings.
Jodhpur and Udaipur A few hundred kilometers southeast lies Jodhpur, the 'blue city'. The sight of Jodhpur is dominated by the Mehrangarh Fort, a mighty fortress that towers high above the inner city. Walk as far as possible into the old town for picturesque blue houses and streets. Udaipur is considered the most romantic city in India and is situated in a valley along the azure blue Pichola lake. There are beautiful palaces in and on the lake, the highlight of which is the extravagant Lake Palace where the James Bond film Octopussy was shot. Udaipur is the city to take it easy, and to enjoy delicious food and drinks at sunset, with a view over the lake.
